Whyalla
High School was the first high school built in Whyalla. It was built by
BHP in 1943, as a Technical school for BHP’s apprentices to be educated
in. Since then Whyalla High School has been badged as a High School for
years 8 to 12, and is now a middle school catering for years 8, 9 and
10.
Whyalla High school has an enrolment which sits around 360 students each year. The majority of our students come from within the city precincts and from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds. The majority of our students are from English speaking families.
We currently have 22 NEP students and 22 Aboriginal students, almost one third of our student population are School Card.
At Whyalla High we place great importance on the welfare of the whole child. A positive learning environment is developed and supported through positive relationships, middle school methodologies, faculty support, individual learning plans and the Flexible Learning Individual Programming centre. Because of our concern for the wellbeing of the whole child we maintain a Student Services Faculty, consisting of the Deputy Principal, Student Services Coordinator, Chaplain and Aboriginal Secondary Transition Broker. We recognise and work successfully with relevant agencies to provide extra support for students and alternative pathways both within and outside of our school site.
The students at Whyalla High School are consistently successful in many areas. Some examples are: winners of the 2008 Country Schools Science Competition; winners of the 2008 H. Mutton Award for most student participation in school sports; the highest LAN data results for year 9 Literacy and Numeracy in 2008 in our district.
Our staff are recognised as, and supported as, the creators and maintainers of positive relationships and engaging curricula for all students. Staff are encouraged by site leadership at Whyalla high, in their professional endeavours through a variety of ways. These include regular Performance Management, regular Faculty and year level meetings, regular Strategic Direction meetings, collection and use of test results and SACSA level indicators to support teaching programs, provision of financial support to attend some Training and Development.
Our staff excels in many of their professional activities, sharing their skills and knowledge with us all. We have the district Intel Trainer on site, the Moodle Masters, Commercial Cookery VET trainer, District Sport organiser, to name just a few.
Our staff have been keen to be amongst the first South Australian teachers to update their skills in many areas including in 2009, moderation and preparation of the new Personal Learning Plan program. Staff have annually offered at least one new subject for student selection at Whyalla High. This year staff has prepared a Year 9 and 10 Outdoor Education program to begin in 2010.
We emphasise the supportive environment of our subject faculties. In these faculties the subject staff work together to prepare extra-curricula activities and recognise individual student needs both academically and holistically.
