Contact Mr Peter Usher

My name is Pete Usher and I am the transition coordinator at Whyalla High School. This letter and the attached calendar contain details about the transition process for 2020. I am excited to introduce some new initiatives to the transition process for your child. We are endeavouring to provide more opportunities to work with your child, their teacher, primary schools, and families to create a seamless transition from primary to secondary level of education. Your child will have the opportunity to engage in numerous site visits and events at Whyalla High School including: Open Night, Half Day Visit, Full Day Transition Visits, Parent Information Night and numerous visits to your child’s primary school.

The Introduction visit

This visit is designed for me to visit your child’s primary school and begin to build relationships with your child so that the transition to high school will be as seamless as possible and they will get to know me as a familiar face of Whyalla High School.

Half Day Visits

The half day visit is where your child visits Whyalla High School for their first taste of secondary school. The visits run from 9:00am until 1:20pm. The purpose of this initial visit is to provide your child with the opportunity to see what we have to offer and engage in hands-on lessons throughout the morning. It is structured in a comfortable setting with your child conducting the visit with their year 7 teacher and year 8 peer support leaders previously from their primary school.

Open Night

This provides the opportunity for you and your child to have a look around our school and have a guided tour of the facilities to learn more about our community and teaching staff. You can also see what Whyalla High School has to offer through our Virtual Tour and School Life Videos.

Q and A School Visit

The Q and A visit is where I will once again visit your child’s primary school with current year 8 students and lead a session about transitioning into Whyalla High School and what it entails. We will answer any questions which your child may have and talk about experiences from the year 8 students themselves who transitioned from your child’s primary school.

Parent/Carers Information Evening

Parent/Carers Information Evening is the opportunity to gain an insight into our school community, welcoming you and having the opportunity to ask any questions to the staff at Whyalla High School. These sessions are just for families who have intended to enrol at our school in 2021.

Full Transition Day

Your child will be involved in two full day transition visits in 2020 in Week 9, Term 4. The full day visits are where your child will attend Whyalla High School without their year 7 teachers and with students from the other primary schools. Your child will be involved in two typical days as a year 8, seamlessly integrating into our community and engaging in both core and experiential lessons. It will be a day filled with fun and interactive activities which will promote positive interactions and relationships between your child and teachers and students from around Whyalla.

Settling the nerves School Visit

This will be another opportunity where I will once again be visiting your child’s primary school for an afternoon to answer any final questions your child may have.
